37) Make Cookies (Multicolor Bulls Eye Cookies)

This weekend we made these fabulous Bulls eye Cookies, they are delicious, easy to make and most of all beautiful. We made them for a very special wedding we are headed to today but they would be fun to make for any holiday or party since you can make them in whatever colors you want. Last Winter we made some rainbow ones that looked more like modern art then baked goods. The recipe is from the Martha Stewart Cookies App and is also on The Martha Stewart Website. To make the dough you need:
2/3 cup of milk
3 sticks of butter
1 3/4 cups of sugar
2 large whole eggs
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon vanilla
5 cups flour

Beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer on medium-high until fluffy, about 3-4 minutes. Add the eggs and salt and beat well. Add the milk and vanilla, then add flour a little at a time until fully incorporated. Then the fun part. Divide the dough into the amount of different colors you want and carefully mix gel food coloring to color the dough. The Bee helped make the dough, she loves adding things into the mixer but she was most excited to help me mix in the color. Adding a little bit of food coloring and then watching it change colors as you stir is a little like magic. Once the doughs have been mixed, wrap in plastic and let sit in the fridge.
After the doughs have chilled a little you want to take then out one at a time, starting with the color you want to be in the center. Take the first color and roll it out into a worm or log. Then take the next color, using some extra flour on your workspace roll the dough out with a rolling pin and then wrap around the log, carefully pinching the edged closed. Repeat this step with all your colors, creating a large log. Then wrap the log in plastic wrap and put back in the fridge. You can place the log in a paper towel roll to help it hold it's shape. After the dough has chilled for a while, take out the log and roll it out a little, like you would if you were making a worm out of clay. This whole project is very similar to working with clay and reminds me a lot of our milliflore polymer clay bead project. Then you are ready to slice and bake. Start by preheating the oven to 350 then slice the dough using dental floss, we didn't have dental floss so I used fishing line and it worked great. Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes, let cool on a wire rack and enjoy!
